Breast Reconstruction

Know Your Post-Mastectomy Options

Breast reconstruction utilizes several plastic surgery techniques to restore a breast to near normal shape and appearance following mastectomy.

How much does breast reconstruction cost?

The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act is a federal law passed in 1998 that requires all group health plans that cover mastectomies to also provide coverage for reconstructive surgery as well as other post-mastectomy benefits (such as an external breast prosthesis or lymphedema treatment).

Breast reconstruction surgery after breast cancer is considered a reconstructive procedure and should be covered by health insurance. However, your coverage may only provide a portion of the total fee. Be sure to consult with your insurance company in advance of any surgery.

Breast reconstruction costs may include:

  • Surgeon's fee
  • Hospital or surgical facility costs
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Prescriptions for medication
  • Post-surgery garments
  • Medical tests and imaging

When choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon for breast reconstruction, remember that the surgeon's experience and your comfort with him or her are just as important as the final cost of the surgery.
